What Kant calls the “categorical imperative” is, he believes, the correct principle for determining how imperfect rational beings ought to treat themselves or one another.

In the case of my interactions with other moral agents, what the categorical imperative requires of me, as was noted in the earlier characterization of Kant’s views, is that I never make an exception for myself by acting on reasons I could not will that every other rational being could act on.

For example, I cannot make a deceitful promise, hoping to benefit from the deceit, and universalize my reasons (what Kant calls my “subjective maxim”), since if all moral agents were to do what I aspire to do, then no one would believe such promises when they were made.

If I were to universalize the exception (making a deceitful promise), I would destroy the rule (the making of reliable promises). Thus, am I unable to universalize my reasons for making my deceitful promise, and thus is wrong to make it.

To insure that I do not do what is wrong, I must abide by the first formulation of the categorical imperative, the Formula of Universal Law: ”I ought never to act except in such a way that I can also will that my maxim should become a universal law.”
