The immorality of making a deceitful promise also can be illuminated, Kant thinks, by viewing it against the backdrop of the kind of value moral agents possess. As was mentioned earlier, the worth of rational beings does not rule out the permissibility of making use of their skills or services. It does rule out treating them as if they had no value over and above the use we can make of them.

This is something I am guilty of, for example, whenever I withhold information from moral agents that is relevant to their making a rational judgment because I stand to gain from their ignorance.

For example, if I were to promise Ann that I will return the money I want to borrow from her, but withheld from her my intention not to repay, then I would be keeping from her information that is relevant to her making a rational judgment about whether to lend me the money.

And I do this because I stand to be the beneficiary of her ignorance. (Were she to know of my intention never to repay, she probably would not lend.) In this way, then, I treat Ann as if she were a mere thing. To treat her in this way, Kant believes, is wrong.  For we are always, he writes, ”to treat humanity, both in(our) own person and in the person of every other, always as an end, never as a means merely.” This, the second formulation Kant gives of the categorical imperative, is referred to as the Formula of End in itself.

 ここで、彼女は無知の受益者(the beneficiary of her ignorance)という立場にある。

この「定言命法」(the categorical imperative)に関する第2法式(the second formulation)は、「目的それ自体の法式」(the Formula of End in itself)と呼ぶ。
